How to Get a Traffic Ticket

According to a national poll by Mason Dixon Polling & Research, sponsored by the National Safety Commission:

  • 71 percent of Americans have not heard of “Move Over” laws;
  • 86 percent support enacting “Move Over” laws in all 50 states; and
  • 90 percent believe traffic stops and roadside emergencies are dangerous for law enforcement and first responders.

A friend’s son was recently ticketed for this exact infraction. A police car was on the side of the road writing a ticket to someone else (turned out there were 2 police cars). He slowed down to pass but did not move into the other lane. The second police car immediately pulled him over and gave him a ticket. He had never heard of the law.  The cost of the ticket was $754, with 3 points on your license and a mandatory court appearance, where they informed him that: “If any emergency vehicle is on the side of the road, if you are able, you are to move into the far lane.

Please let everyone you know about this new law.

    I didn’t even know about this law! That’s crazy. I see the point of it, but I’m surprised they haven’t promoted it more so that people understand what it is!

    I found this to be true today. As I changed lanes to pass a police car just about to leave the scene of a violation, the officer was ready to grant another citation to the vehicle behind me for driving in the lane next to the stopped officer. Westminster Colorado.
