Through the Healthy, Hunger Free Kids Act, the USDA is making major changes in school meals for the first time in 15 years. The health and nutrition of our nation’s children is a real problem. Health issues like obesity and diabetes abound, along with a marked decrease in physical ability.

This act, championed by First Lady Michelle Obama and signed by President Obama, is meant to overhaul school meals to make them more nutritionally sound and healthy. School meals are somewhat notorious for not being very high quality, and the effects can readily be seen in the health of American Children.

Using the latest nutritional science and evaluating the real needs of kids in American schools, the Healthy, Hunger Free Kids Act is a way to move the nation’s schools forward in the nutrition that they are providing to children every day during the school year. With better healthy food will should come marked decreases in health issues for children.

Children are truly the future, and it is the responsibility of adults to make sure that they are happy and healthy. As such, this legislation and other initiatives like it act to push our health standards forward to a better place overall.
