Dale Carnegie and How to Influence People
I have been reading Dale Carnegie’s book “How to Win Friends and Influence People”; it is fascinating. I’ve made it through the first few chapters and I just had to share what I’ve learned with my fellow readers.
Here is the first Principle:
Don’t Criticize, Condemn, or Complain
Benjamin Franklin had the same idea “I will speak ill of no man … and speak all the good I know of everybody.” This belief helped make him a great diplomat and leader. It is hard to live by this statement if you are used to condemning others.
Have you ever had a parent, teacher, employer criticize everything you did? How did this make you feel? Did you want to go out with a smile on your face and go above and beyond for that person? My guess is probably not, but it is just a guess. Dale Carnegie said give praise when appropriate and never criticize (if this is a quote, insert quotations, if not, add “to” after said). Giving praise when it is earned will produce better workers in your organization and better students in the classroom. Give it a try; it doesn’t cost you any money, just a little change in attitude.
I have been known to vent and talk out my problems, but only with my mother or close friends who know I am venting. Venting is a great way to get rid of stress and to work through your problems. Don’t overdo it; it can lead to complaining. Never complain over a social media site. The whole world can see what you are doing and if you don’t want your employer or grandmother to see what you wrote, don’t say it online. It very well could save your job, relationship, and life.
Dale Carnegie’s Advice
For this week let us consider Dale Carnegie’s advice: Don’t Criticize, Condemn, or Complain. I would love to hear how your life has changed through this advice.
