So you are the best spouse in the world and have surprised your special someone with a brand new car for Christmas! Good for you! But it’s Christmas and your insurance agent isn’t in the office. What do you do? How do you get the new car insured so your honey can take a test drive? You have a couple of options to make sure your new car is protected.
First, if you know before Christmas which car you’ll be buying call your agent ahead of time. We can always add the car to your policy with a future effective date to avoid a timing crisis.
Second, many of the insurance companies are open late, weekend, and holiday hours just for this reason. Call the number on the back of your ID card. The companies’ customer service can always make changes to your policy and notify the agent after.
Finally, you do have a grace period of two weeks to get new cars added to your policy. During that time the policy will extend to your new car with all the coverage you currently have. But be careful! If all you have on your policy is liability then buy a new car that will require comprehensive and collision the policy will still only extend with your existing limits. So call your insurance company or agent as soon as you can. We will add the car to your policy effective the day you bought it.
