Stop and Be Thankful

Sometimes life can be very hectic when we are running at a thousand miles an hour. At times, it is hard to see the blessing that your work can bring. I have realized that being thankful for 3 different things every single day can change one’s life.

Learning to be thankful starts with you. Start with things that you often take for granted like having a warm shower in the morning, your house, apartment, room, or your car. You will begin to develop a positive outlook on life.

I started being thankful for 3 things daily for my New Year’s resolution. I didn’t think of the big picture as much as I could have but now my outlook has changed. I am thinking of others and how I am grateful for every single person that is in my life.

Here at Affordable American Insurance things can be a little crazy at times but that is how every organization is. It is when we lose track of what is important to us, to our company, and to our community that we start to lose our focus.

Working at Affordable American Insurance is truly a blessing. I am able to use what I learn and apply it to a company. I work with one of my best friends Chris Fernandez which can often be a challenge at times but I am learning how to work in a corporate team.

I am thankful for my coworkers. Affordable American Insurance would not be the same without each and every one of them.

As a way of introduction I guess I’ll start with my background. While I was working my way through college, I needed a way to pay my bills. After a rather lengthy job-search, I started in the insurance business in 2000 as a life insurance agent. Very quickly, I developed a passion for the insurance business and even switched my major to Business-Finance. While I loved the business, I quickly grew tired of hearing the same question over and over: “What other products can you offer?” Many of my clients were interested in Home, Auto, and Business insurance. As I continued to hear this question I realized that to continue in the insurance industry, I really needed to be able to offer more than just life insurance products.

In 2004, I was lucky enough to become one of the first members of the AAI team. I started as a producer in one of the original agencies and quickly grew my book of clients to the point where I was able to start my own agency. As I made this transition, I found a real passion in helping other agents join our team and committed more than a few hours every week to the ‘management’ side of the business. Within a few years, my agency had grown to the point that I was able to commit full-time to helping develop other agencies.

Since 2009, I have worked full-time for AAI in a myriad of roles. I have overseen the development of one of the best tech departments in the industry and now spend a significant amount of time on internal operations.

If I had to offer one tip to an insurance agent who is leaving the captive world to start an independent insurance agency, it would be: “Take your time and find the ‘right’ way to go independent.” While the rare agent may be able to do it on their own, most are going to need to join an organization like AAI. If you’re looking at joining a group, be sure to call agents who are already a part of that group. Get their opinion and compare that with what other agents tell you.

Auto Insurance for college students

So you are about to return to college or university. It may be a long cold semester here in Colorado. If we play our cards right, we should be able to save you some extra money so you can afford late night lattes or pizza during a study session.

The first thing that you may be wondering about your auto policy is whether you should drop your auto insurance for a few months since you won’t be driving your vehicle. It could save you some extra money but before you do it, contact your agent or insurance company and let them know that you won’t have your vehicle with you while you are attending college. You may qualify for a distant student discount. You may be able to save more on your auto policy if you are going to a college in another state without your vehicle than you would if you went to a local commuter college. By keeping your insurance, you won’t have a lapse in your coverage this will make it easier for you to find a different insurance company if the need arises.

Hitting the books regularly pays off whether it is a simple discount or having a high GPA. Getting good grades may unlock the good student discount. It is just another incentive to keep your grades up.

Renter’s Insurance

So you have had it with the dorms and it is time to move into a nice cozy apartment. Apartments are great but most require their tenants to have renter’s insurance. Renter’s insurance is inexpensive and covers your property and liability.

Liability protects you from someone bringing a claim against you or sues you for property damage and bodily injury that you caused.

Tips for Taking Down the Lights

Christmas and New Years has passed so it is time to take down the tree and the lights. Before you climb up onto your roof here is a few things you should remember.

Make sure your ladder has all of the screws and blots attached to the right places. This will reduce the likelihood that your ladder will collapse, leaving you hanging.
Don’t yank out your Christmas light’s cord. Yanking the cord will damage it increasing the chance of a fire the next year.
Always be careful when there is ice around.

A Time to Look Back

As Affordable American Insurance looks back at the past year, we have been very blessed. We have grown as a company and have helped out our community more. We were able to help out the Denver Rescue Mission with a Coat Drive. We were able to donate $8,375 to The Autism Society of Colorado (ASC) to support the Down Syndrome-Autism Connection program with the help of Safeco and one of our agents Kelly Krei. We believe we are making a difference in Colorado and we couldn’t do what we do without each of our clients.
