Starting your own business and succeeding depends on you and you alone. On top of a great idea and some business savvy, you need to keep mind, body, and spirit healthy to face all the grueling hours of starting a business.
Unfortunately, taking care of yourself often gets pushed to the back seat, and meetings, troubleshooting, networking, selling, producing, marketing, managing, organizing, delegating, customer service, etc. takes a front seat. Incorporating health, nutrition, and maybe a little fitness into your busy daily schedule is vital to keeping your business (and yourself) alive.
Start incorporating a fit and healthy lifestyle into a hectic business day
We know how gratifying it can be to quit your day job, start your own business, be your own boss, and finally, feel like you are doing what you want to do. Following your dream and taking a chance on yourself is great for the spirit, but trust us, you’re going to need every ounce of energy you have when starting your own business to sustain your mind and your body. You have to be physically able to endure long work days, and your mind has to be sharp to keep a lot of balls in the air.
There are simple ways you can improve your health and your fitness without feeling like you are taking too much time out of your day. When you are just starting out, going to the gym may not be an option. What is an option is standing instead of sitting at your desk all week. Standing instead of sitting for few hours a day will significantly improve your health and increase your energy.
Have walking meetings to get your blood flowing
Walking and talking is also a great way to get your body moving, your blood flowing, and your eyes focused on something other than a computer screen. In the starting phases of a business, take walking meetings. It will get you moving, and any movement is better than none. You’ll also be breaking your routine. A little change of pace often makes room for creativity and thinking outside the box. You never know what ideas may pop up as you’re walking through the park, or to the nearest coffee shop, bouncing ideas off of your partner or fellow entrepreneur.
And, while you’re walking and talking, be sure to carry a water bottle with you, so you always replenish your fluids. Water is life! Don’t go through a whole day without it. Get into the habit of carrying a water bottle around with you everywhere. Oh, and replace any bagels, muffins, and pastries in the common area with fruits and veggies. We know, that sounds so terribly boring, but if you’re running a business, don’t destroy your chances of success by feeding your body crap that will only slow you down. Best way to eat them is to see them. So keep a nice, colorful basket of healthy edibles in sight and you’ll be surprised how much easier it will be to snack on the good stuff.
And finally, make sure you get a good night’s sleep. If nothing else, even if you forgot to drink water, swallowed two donuts, and ate fast food for lunch and dinner, at least do yourself, your body, and your business a favor and get a full night’s rest, allowing your body to recover. After all, tomorrow is another day, and you need to be at the top of your game.
