Renters Insurance 101
If you are planning on moving to downtown Denver you may be moving into an apartment. Most apartments require their tenants to purchase renters insurance.
If you are going to be living in an apartment and have opted to keep your vehicle consider purchasing your auto insurance and renters insurance at the same company. You will most likely be rewarded a multiline discount.
Two Parts to Renters Insurance
Renters insurance is broken down into property and personal liability. We will go deeper into both of these topics.
Property
Your belonging should be protected from: Fire, Wind, Hail, Explosions, Riots, Aircraft, Vehicles, Smoke, Vandalism/Mischief, Theft, Falling Objects, Weight of Snow/Ice, and others. Renters insurance covers your belongings for these perils. If you are confused about the type of coverage you have contact your local independent Affordable American Insurance agent and they will be happy to walk you through your policy.
Liability
The personal liability section of your renter’s insurance policy protects you from someone suing you for bodily injury or property damage that you may have caused. For more information call your local insurance agent or look at our at our last blog on this topic here: http://affordableamericaninsurance.com/blog/2010/12/23/what-renters-insurance-covers/
Renters Insurance
You may think that the landlord has insurance on his property, since he owns it. It is a good assumption. Your landlord probably does have insurance but it usually only covers his property such as the building. You and your belongings will not be covered unless you have a renter’s insurance policy. This type of insurance usually costs about $15-$20 month and could open up discounts on your auto policy if you have your renters insurance and auto insurance at the same company.
